We sat down with our instructor Bree and quizzed her on her horsey history, and what she hopes to achieve in the future.
1. How long have you been riding?
I have been riding since I was in year 3 when my 2 best friends wanted me to go with them! I jumped on the pony-band wagon (so to speak) and was soon in love with riding. My Aunty bought me a day riding Shetland ponies and that was it - while my friends stopped riding I kept going - and here I am!
2. How old were you when you got your first horse? Can you tell us about him/her?
The first horse I had the privilege of riding like my own was a big grumpy spotty chestnut gelding called Bob, this was around 6 years ago. He was massive, standing at 16.3hh and was probably way to big for me to handle. I persisted with him and the lessons I learnt while riding him were incredibly valuable.
3. When did you start with VPRS?
I started nearly 3 years ago now! Time flies when you’re having fun!
4. What is your favourite part about being an instructor?
My favourite thing about being an instructor would have to be ‘the light bulb moment' where you can see that everything just clicks for your student. You can just tell that they understand what you've been working toward and that the horse and rider are now working together as a team.
5. Can you tell us a bit about your current horse Minnie?
Minnie is and 8yr old 14.2 Quarter Horse x Clydie mare that is full of spunk! She loves jumping and although flatwork isn't her favourite she tries so hard for me!
She has taught me about patience and having to work hard for what you want to achieve. Nothing comes for free with Minnie, and everyone who knows us is aware of how much hard work we have put in to get to where we are today.
We're working toward her becoming a quality eventing horse - and we are well on the way given how much she loves jumping and how bold her jumping style is.
Fun fact! Minnie used to be a trail riding leader at a property in Mansfield. She also has had a foal who was named Mouse (how cute!?)
6. What are your equestrian goals/ambitions?
I’m hoping to take Minnie up the grades aiming to compete in some grade three showjumping competitions this year.
Personally, I hope to take on a young horse this year and make good progress with them. I would also love to increase my dressage skills by riding some higher level movements on a few schoolmasters and hopefully get to ride some higher level tests!
